Macro with the Olloclip

31 01 2014

I’ve been neglecting this blog lately for 2 reasons: 1) I’ve been getting my new computer (and new Photoshop CS6!) set up, and 2) been studying like mad for the PHR (the big HR certification). Well as of this afternoon, I can happily say I passed! So now I have to catch up…

For Christmas I got an Olloclip (a lens for an iPhone camera – and yes, it should have a line over the first O, but I’ve no idea how) and tested out the macro lens.

Have to admit, the clarity it’s capable of is pretty impressive. In the right setting, the quality can rival that of my SLR.

It has some challenges though. Certain objects it has trouble focusing on… with a sprig of flowers, for example, it wants to focus behind them. This was the closest I could get with this:

Less successful were these berries… I tried about 20 times to get them in focus. Sometimes it would focus for a millisecond, but the instant I pressed the shutter button, it would dissolve into blur.

Also, you have to get the lens REALLY close to the subject, but too close and you’ll have depth of field problems:

See, the pinecone edges are clear, but it's middle is blurry.

Some daffodil shoots coming up - the plants are getting very confused with the weather lately (one day 30 degrees, and the next 70)

Overall though, it’s pretty nice.

The Olloclip on whole is a 3-in-1. The fisheye lens is pretty neat. It says it has a wide angle too, but I haven’t tried that component. My biggest issue with it is that it fits on the iPhone itself and doesn’t account for case sizes, so I have to take my case off when I want to use it – which is really difficult! But I think this macro will make my Etsy product photography much easier. 🙂
