1800s Style

22 02 2013

Pretty damned sure I haven’t posted this drawing here yet, but naturally can’t be bothered to check for it as I am exhausted (but in a good way this week – wrote a business contract for work and weirdly found the process exhilarating. Shared this with a friend who said I should have been a lawyer….Pah!)

Caroline Frank and Otto Birr

Caroline Frank and Otto Birr

Genealogy is an occasional obsession of mine. Last month, was super excited to find a photo of relatives I’ve never seen before. Turned them into ink and watercolor. Showed the actual photo to the gramps (they were his grandparents) who could recognize them – tiny, petite Caroline and robust Otto, though by the time he knew them, Otto’d lost both legs and had to be pulled around in something like a wagon. You’d think now, with modern medicine, the end of life would be less tragic, but in my experience it rarely is.

Travels for Art

13 02 2013

Florida has no end of cool artsy things. Last month in Amelia Island, spotted these decorations through the window of a bookstore:

At first I thought they were Ikea lamps, but no – they’re globes made out of fortune tellers! Grade school stuff!
Fortune tellers! Brilliant idea.

Then on my recent trip to St. Pete:
Guess what these are....arm bands!

Guess what these are….arm bands!

I thought they were strands of origami cranes from far away, when actually they’re admission arm bands to:

The Dali museum…ooh yes.

Above, the only picture of anything Dali-esque taken…
Mysterious, gloomy model...?

Mysterious, gloomy model…?

This set up was my favorite. The mannequin-model sits in this vintage car with water streaming down the insides of the windows. Then you round the car and see that the driver is:

But there’s also so much art in the natural world..
Love me some banyan trees.

Love me some banyan trees.

Speaking of trees, I found a brand new kind. At least, new to me:

And no, these aren’t just a few blooms on the tree. The entire tree is composed of brilliant red flowers, no leaves! What IS this tree?!

I’m in love with it. So are these black birds… grackels? They were all over it.

Lemur

7 02 2013

I saw this lemur in a pet store last year; this is how the encounter looked in my memory this year:

Atypical pet option

Atypical pet option

Yes, that’s intended to be me, and no, it does not succeed. The guy I was dating at the time was not too excited about the lemur.

Then I found a pic I took of the lemur that day. Feel a bit validated. Proof!

Can’t share the name of the pet shop, because I suspect everything is not on the up and up there. The Lake Eola swan theft is not easily forgotten.
